GOING GREEN: Hula Hoop Your Laundry To A Squeaky Clean

File under awesome innovations!

If you’re looking for a unique, fun way to lessen your environmental footprint and get fit at the same time, you’re in luck.

The Twist and Clean, a semi-finalist in the Electrolux Design Lab 2012 contest, will have your unmentionables squeaky clean and your abs chiseled to perfection in no time.

OK, it may not guarantee you a six pack, but rest assured, it will be the most productive hula-hooping experience you’ll ever have :)

Introduced as a way for designers to “engage [the] senses in new and interesting ways”, the nifty competition’s 30 semi-finalists come from five continents and 20 countries (the 10 finalists will square off with their designs in Milan, Italy, in late October).

In coming up with their designs, entrants were asked to embrace Electrolux’s design philosophy “whilst working to create new home appliances that stimulate, engage and enlighten all of our senses.”  (for more info on the contest, see the link in credits, below).

Sang-soon Lee of South Korea’s Yongin University, designed the futuristic hula hoop that achieves something truly remarkable: along with saving precious water, and encouraging fitness and individual health, it creates, rather than uses energy, as it washes. How cool is that?!
The product’s hollow centre tube is easily “loaded” with small to medium sized items such as socks, under garments or thin delicates along with liquid laundry detergent. The rest is up to you…and your rotating hips.
For those of us with kids (that think hula hooping is great fun) strange and wonderful transfer-of-laundry-responsibility daydreams are sure to be unleashed if this ingenious little beauty ever makes it to store shelves.  In the meantime, I applaud you, Ms. Lee, for coming up with one heckuva neat idea gloriously suited to the times.

  1. I use to be great at this and would have gotten a lot of unmentionable clean, but now I’m afraid I’d be looking at that thing laying down around my feet. The hula hoop, not the unmentionables. Lost my touch, and my waste line. Ugh! But, you go, Ms. Lee!
